Hypertension Diagnostics Receives Notice of SDA Approval to Market CVProfilor® DO-2020 CardioVascular Profiling System in China

ST. PAUL, MNJanuary 7, 2003 – Hypertension Diagnostics, Inc., (NASDAQ SmallCap: HDII) announced today that it has been advised that ShenZhen Filiale ShenYong Medical-Pharmacal Co., HDI’s exclusive distributor in China, has received approval from the Chinese State Drug Administration (SDA) to import and market the CVProfilor® DO-2020 CardioVascular Profiling System to physicians in China. The CVProfilor® System is used for non-invasively screening, diagnosing and monitoring the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease, and for medical scientists to conduct clinical research studies, including evaluations of cardiovascular drugs. The SDA is the official entity designated by the central government to regulate importation and marketing of medical devices in China.

China represents the most populous nation in the world with over 1.2 billion people. “We are very pleased with the SDA approval and with the fact that we may now move forward in providing physicians with a premier non-invasive diagnostic medical device for the early detection of cardiovascular disease,” said Mr. Fuquan Liu, Executive Manager of ShenZhen Filiale ShenYong Medical-Pharmacal Co. Recent estimates indicate that nearly 130 million Chinese have high blood pressure which is up from 90 million in 1990. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), high blood pressure causes about half of the heart disease and stroke deaths worldwide.

“For a developing country, such as China, prevention is a very cost-effective option,” said Greg H. Guettler, President. “Heart attacks claim approximately 2.8 million lives annually, affecting both the health of the Chinese people and their economy by driving up health care costs. With a rapidly aging population and 40% of deaths in China currently resulting from heart disease or strokes, China is poised for a costly health care crisis,” added Guettler.

“We have been working for some time to increase our presence in China. Since 2000, we have shipped ten CVProfilor® DO-2020 Systems for use in China. We also had eight Chinese cardiologists, all users of the CVProfilor® DO-2020 System, visit our headquarters in November 2002. SDA approval represents a positive step in the growth of the Company. Immediately after we learned of the approval, we shipped an additional five CVProfilor® DO-2020 Systems for use in China, bringing our total units shipped to fifteen. Additionally, we expect to begin a regular schedule of future shipments to China in the spring of 2003,” said Guettler. “China has approximately 1.5 million doctors and approximately 90,000 hospitals. Preventing cardiovascular disease in the Chinese population is of great importance to these physicians and we see this market as a source of opportunity for us in the future,” added Guettler.
