Hypertension Diagnostics to Conduct Direct-To-Consumer Test Market of its CVProfilor® in Cooperation with Costco Wholesale Corporation

ST. PAUL, MN August 20, 2002 – Hypertension Diagnostics, Inc. (Nasdaq SmallCap: HDII), announced today that it will be offering a direct-to-consumer CVProfile™ Test to members of Costco Wholesale warehouses as part of a test market to be conducted this Fall in several West Coast stores. Cardiovascular profiles, utilizing the CVProfilor® DO-2020 System, will be conducted in conjunction with OnSite Wellness Medical Associates, Inc. of Torrance, California. Assuming that the test market proves valuable to Costco members, cardiovascular profiles will be offered to members nationwide.

“The American Heart Association recently issued new guidelines suggesting that every person in the United States be evaluated periodically for the risk of having a heart attack or stroke starting at the age of 20,” said Greg H. Guettler, President of Hypertension Diagnostics. “The Costco Wholesale Corporation is offering an important service by providing this simple, painless, and non-invasive test to their membership. Members will be able to obtain an indication of their risk for cardiovascular disease by taking just a few minutes during their shopping at Costco. Individuals who show an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, which is evident by a reduction of arterial elasticity (or increased blood vessel stiffness), will be provided with information to share with their physician for additional medical and diagnostic testing. Obtaining accurate information on one’s blood pressure and the health condition of the small arteries, where cardiovascular disease begins, allows at-risk individuals to be identified at an earlier age – right in line with the current American Heart Association guidelines,” added Guettler.

Costco Wholesale Corporation operates an international chain of membership warehouses, mainly under the "Costco Wholesale" name, that carry quality, brand name merchandise at substantially lower prices than are typically found at conventional wholesale or retail sources. Costco is publicly traded under the Nasdaq ticker symbol "COST", is based in Issaquah, Washington, and currently has 18.4 million members with revenue of $34.14 billion in fiscal year ended September 2, 2001.

Hypertension Diagnostics, Inc. designs, develops, manufactures and markets proprietary cardiovascular profiling systems for medical applications and clinical research. These systems are marketed to physicians, other health care professionals and researchers by a direct sales force and via distributors throughout the world. In addition to providing blood pressure values, the systems non-invasively detect subtle changes in the compliance or elasticity of both large and small arteries which is a unique feature of HDI’s technology.
