According to the ADA, 17 million people in the United States have
diabetes, of which 5.9 million people don’t yet know it. “Diabetes is the
fifth deadliest disease in the United States and is a major risk factor in
the progression of cardiovascular disease,” said Greg H. Guettler,
president of Hypertension Diagnostics, Inc. (“HDI”). “Diabetes has a
destructive impact on blood vessels as indicated by the fact that
approximately 80% of all diabetic mortality is due to cardiovascular
disease complications. In addition, diabetes is a major risk factor in the
progression of cardiovascular disease. The risk of stroke is 2 to 4 times
higher among people with diabetes, 73% of adults with diabetes have
hypertension, and diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and kidney
disease among adults 20-74 years old. The CVProfilor® DO-2020
provides physicians with a better way to identify those patients at risk
for cardiovascular disease complications and a better way to manage this
high-risk patient population,” added Guettler.
In addition to demonstrating the CVProfilor® DO-2020, the
Company announced that its HDI/PulseWave™ CR-2000 Research System was
featured in an abstract presented at the ADA’s 62nd Annual Meeting and
Scientific Sessions. Dr. Alicia J. Jenkins and her colleagues from the
University of Melbourne, Australia, presented an abstract entitled
“Comparative Study of Non-Invasive Measures of Vascular Health in Type 2
Diabetes.” This abstract states that non-invasive technologies like HDI’s
CardioVascular Profiling Systems (CVProfilor® DO-2020 and HDI/PulseWave™
CR-2000 Research model) may provide a means of assessing vascular health
in diabetics, may facilitate early identification of high-atherosclerosis
risk patients (patients at risk for developing the formation of plaques
and the accumulation of fatty deposits lining the walls of the arteries,
thereby affecting blood flow), and may be useful in monitoring the
effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.
Hypertension Diagnostics, Inc. designs, develops, manufactures and markets
proprietary cardiovascular profiling systems for medical applications and
clinical research. These systems are marketed to physicians, other health
care professionals and researchers by a direct sales force and via
distributors throughout the world. In addition to providing blood pressure
values, the systems non-invasively detect subtle changes in the compliance
or elasticity of both large and small arteries which is a unique feature
of HDI’s technology.
